Girl Power
a series of feminine empowerment videos

vol. 1
color video (6.5 minutes), fall 2000

Girl Power is a reconstructed memory presented through found footage of an old family movie (The Big Wheel Movie) and children's popular media from the 1970s that deal with racing imagery (Speed Racer and Herbie the Love Bug). The fury in the personal story stems from the fact that little girl (the artist as a child) is cast as a nurse while the boys (her brothers and their friends) star as big wheel racers. Even to a four year old the injustice of gender construction is felt. The tiny girl is left crying in humiliation at the bottom of the hill, only to wait for all the drivers to end up in a horrific crash pile at the bottom.

vol. 2
color video (6 minutes), spring 2001

Girl Power vol. 2, deals with the expression of sensuality/sexuality of young girls and the power that is both drawn from that expression and the power that is lost with the loss of childhood innocence. The female menstrual cycle is used to structure the piece, drawing from instructional and medical found footage along with both the child (Pipi Longstockings) and adult adventure (James Bond) fantasies, which incidentally are gendered female and male respectively. The images gathered are called to the viewer's attention both in celebration and for a humorous, thoughtful reflection touched by irony.
